Alabama Kindergarten Teacher, 49, Arrested for Alleged Sexual Encounter with Teen in Bathroom

An Alabama kindergarten teacher who was recently recognized as "Teacher of the Year" was arrested on Friday morning on a series of disturbing sex charges involving local teenagers. Heather Ozment, 49, an educator at Calera Elementary School, now faces multiple counts, including first- and second-degree sexual abuse and enticing a child to enter a vehicle or house for immoral purposes.

According to law enforcement officials, the alleged crimes occurred after school hours and did not take place on school property or involve Ozment’s own students. The incidents reportedly involved minors from the local area, prompting the Calera Police Department to act swiftly following reports of inappropriate conduct. Police Chief David Hyche emphasized the seriousness of the case, stating, "Nothing we do in law enforcement is more important than protecting the most vulnerable in our community."

Authorities said Owens House, a children’s advocacy organization, worked closely with investigators by conducting forensic interviews and examinations of juvenile victims. This collaborative effort aims to ensure that all potential victims are identified and supported, and that the investigation is conducted with sensitivity and thoroughness.

The Shelby County Schools district became aware of the allegations in April. Officials immediately placed Ozment on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation. "The teacher was immediately put on leave for the remainder of the school year while the matter was investigated by local law enforcement," the district said in an official statement. It remains unclear exactly when the offenses allegedly took place, though authorities have confirmed they happened outside of regular school activities and campus grounds.

Ozment had been honored as the school’s Teacher of the Year for the 2024-2025 academic year, a recognition that has since been overshadowed by the gravity of the charges against her. A spokesperson for the district reiterated that, “The alleged conduct occurred after school hours and did not take place at a school facility. We are unable to provide more information as it is an employee matter.”

Heather Ozment was booked into the Shelby County Jail on Friday but was released later the same day. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities seek any additional information about the case and urge anyone with relevant knowledge to come forward.
