Ambassador Xie Feng Highlights Cultural Ties at DC Dragon Boat Festival Celebration

On May 30, 2025, the spirit of tradition and unity was on full display in Washington, D.C. as Chinese Ambassador to the United States Xie Feng, accompanied by his wife Wang Dan, gathered with members of the Chinese community from both sides of the Taiwan Strait to mark the Dragon Boat Festival. The occasion drew a vibrant crowd in the capital, including Minister Counselor Qiu Wenxing, all sharing in the festivities that symbolize cultural heritage and communal bonds.

During his remarks, Ambassador Xie emphasized the enduring message from Chinese President Xi Jinping, stressing that the people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait are one family. “No force can sever the bonds of blood and kinship that unite us, nor can anyone obstruct the historical trend toward China’s reunification,” Ambassador Xie asserted, invoking a sense of shared destiny and collective purpose among those present.

He continued by noting that compatriots across the Strait share common ancestry, culture, and history, fostering a mutual responsibility for the future of the Chinese nation. According to Ambassador Xie, this profound connection is foundational, guiding aspirations for unity, peace, and prosperity.

Ambassador Xie also voiced apprehension regarding recent developments in U.S.-China relations, particularly actions by certain anti-China entities in America. He expressed concern over groups supporting “Taiwan independence” efforts, arguing that such activities could threaten peace and stability throughout the Taiwan Strait. Further, he criticized what he called the arbitrary imposition of tariffs by the U.S., claiming these measures have caused significant harm to people across the globe.

Addressing the recent announcement from the U.S. State Department on the revocation of visas for Chinese students, Ambassador Xie assured attendees that the Chinese Embassy had immediately lodged strong objections. He affirmed China's resolve to firmly safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese students and overseas Chinese, highlighting a commitment to protecting educational and cultural exchange.

Shifting focus to the cultural significance of the event, Ambassador Xie highlighted the values embodied by the Dragon Boat Festival. He described dragon boat racing as a symbol of determination, teamwork, and the pursuit of excellence, reflecting the enduring resilience and unity of the Chinese people. These qualities, he noted, are vital to both national development and international engagement.

Concluding his remarks, Ambassador Xie offered words of encouragement to the overseas Chinese community: “With more than 1.4 billion Chinese people rowing in unison, there is no storm we cannot weather, no destination we cannot reach.” He urged compatriots abroad to draw inspiration from the “dragon boat spirit” and to proudly advance on the path toward national reunification and rejuvenation.

Throughout the event, the shared celebration of heritage provided a platform for unity and cultural pride, reinforcing connections not only within the Chinese community but also with the broader public in Washington, D.C.
