Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi held high-level talks with Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) Secretary of Foreign Affairs Lorin S. Robert in Xiamen on Thursday, reaffirming both nations' commitment to deepening their comprehensive strategic partnership. The meeting coincided with Robert’s visit to attend the Third China-Pacific Island Countries Foreign Ministers' Meeting, a key regional forum aimed at strengthening cooperation between China and Pacific Island states.

During discussions, Wang Yi emphasized the steady and positive trajectory of China-FSM ties since diplomatic relations were established. He praised the joint efforts that led to the adoption of a unified statement by all participating countries at this year’s foreign ministers’ meeting—a move he said injects renewed momentum into China’s collaboration with Pacific Island nations. “The comprehensive partnership has already brought tangible benefits to the people of the FSM,” Wang noted, highlighting recent achievements in bilateral cooperation.

A focal point of the meeting was the official handover of the China-assisted FSM National Convention Center, which Wang described as a milestone in the countries’ growing relationship. He reiterated China's willingness to expand collaboration under the Belt and Road Initiative, proposing new areas for joint work including infrastructure development, climate change mitigation, and marine scientific research. Additional emphasis was placed on fostering exchanges in education, youth engagement, and local governance.

Wang also expressed appreciation for the FSM Congress’s recent passage of a resolution reaffirming its support for the one-China principle, voicing confidence that the FSM would continue to support China’s core interests, particularly regarding the Taiwan question.

He acknowledged the vital role China has played in supporting Micronesia’s development initiatives, citing the new convention center as a strong symbol of cooperation and goodwill.

Robert also reiterated his government’s unwavering adherence to the one-China principle, stating that Taiwan is considered an inalienable part of China by the FSM. He characterized China not only as a critical development partner but as a global advocate for sustainable progress and equity within the Global South.

Looking ahead, both sides expressed optimism about further strengthening their comprehensive strategic partnership, with the FSM pledging continued collaboration across a range of sectors crucial to the Pacific region’s future.
