A spokesperson for the Chinese Foreign Ministry voiced strong dissatisfaction and firm opposition on Tuesday in response to a recent joint statement issued by the United States, Japan, Australia, and the Philippines. The statement, which pledged to deepen maritime defense cooperation among the four countries, was viewed by China as being overtly aimed at countering its interests in regional waters.

Addressing reporters at a regular press conference in Beijing, spokesperson Lin Jian criticized the joint declaration, which was made public following the 22nd Shangri-La Dialogue held in Singapore on May 31. Lin accused the U.S. and its allies of "hyping up the so-called China threat" and deliberately "stoking confrontation" in relation to disputes in the East China Sea and South China Sea.

Lin emphasized that China has already lodged serious diplomatic representations over the matter, demonstrating the country’s resolute stance on issues it considers vital to its sovereignty and regional stability. According to Lin, the actions of the four countries reflect a mentality rooted in bloc politics and group confrontation, which he described as reminiscent of the Cold War and not in alignment with the current trend toward peace and cooperation in Asia.

“Such actions are outdated and unwelcome in the region,” Lin asserted, adding that attempts to isolate or pressure China will neither resolve disputes nor deter its commitment to defending its territorial sovereignty and maritime interests. He reiterated China’s unwavering determination to protect its land and sea boundaries, urging external parties not to underestimate the country’s resolve.

Furthermore, the spokesperson called for the United States and its allies to desist from “smearing China and misrepresenting facts”, and instead to respect the principle that disputes should be addressed through direct dialogue and consultation among the countries concerned. Lin cautioned that outside interference and the formation of exclusive alliances risk undermining ongoing efforts by regional nations to maintain peace and stability.

“We urge the United States and its allies to cease forming exclusive cliques and interfering with efforts by regional countries to resolve disputes through dialogue and consultation,” Lin stated firmly during the briefing. He concluded by warning that continued actions undermining regional trust would only harm the shared pursuit of prosperity and development for the Asia-Pacific.
