China Calls on U.S. to Cease Arms Sales to Taiwan in Renewed Diplomatic Appeal

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian underscored that the Taiwan question stands as the "core of China's core interests," emphasizing it as the foremost red line that must not be crossed in China-U.S. relations. The statement was made during a press conference in Beijing on Friday, following widespread media reports concerning the United States' plans to increase weapons sales to Taiwan.

Lin reaffirmed China's firm opposition to U.S. arms sales to the Taiwan region. He called upon the United States to strictly adhere to the one-China principle and observe the commitments laid out in the three China-U.S. joint communiques, with a particular emphasis on the August 17 Communique. Lin urged the U.S. to immediately halt all arms sales to Taiwan and avoid actions that could further raise tensions across the Taiwan Straits.

The spokesperson reiterated that China's determination to protect its national sovereignty and territorial integrity remains steadfast. Lin warned that any attempts to interfere in China’s domestic affairs or undermine its core interests would be met with firm responses from Beijing. Lin concluded by expressing hope that the U.S. would handle Taiwan-related issues cautiously to prevent further harm to bilateral ties.
