China Calls on U.S. to Cease Weapons Sales to Taiwan Amid Rising Tensions

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian on Friday reiterated that the Taiwan issue lies at the very heart of China’s core interests, stressing that it constitutes the “first and foremost red line that must not be crossed” in China-U.S. relations. The remarks were delivered following recent reports indicating that the United States is planning to increase arms sales to the Taiwan region.

Lin made clear China’s firm opposition to any form of U.S. military support for Taiwan. He called on Washington to “strictly abide by the one-China principle and the provisions of the three China-U.S. joint communiques,” with particular reference to the August 17 Communique—a foundational document in bilateral relations concerning Taiwan. Lin urged the United States to cease its arms sales to the island and warned against actions that could heighten tensions across the contentious Taiwan Strait.

“China’s resolve to safeguard its national sovereignty and territorial integrity remains unwavering,” Lin emphasized. He asserted that any moves perceived as interference in China’s internal affairs, especially those challenging the country’s position on Taiwan, would meet with a strong response. The spokesperson’s statements reflect continued friction between the world’s two largest economies over Taiwan, an issue that has remained a persistent flashpoint despite repeated diplomatic engagements.

The latest comments underscore the increasing sensitivity and potential volatility surrounding U.S.-Taiwan defense cooperation. Beijing has repeatedly condemned what it views as attempts to bolster separatist forces in Taiwan, warning that such actions risk undermining regional stability and bilateral trust between China and the United States. As discussions on security and sovereignty intensify, both sides are facing growing calls to manage their differences in order to avoid further escalation.
