China Calls on U.S. to End Excessive Use of National Security Concept

China has called on the United States to abandon its broad and frequent use of national security as a justification for trade measures and to work with the international community in supporting a rules-based multilateral trading system. The appeal was made by the Ministry of Commerce during a regular press conference, reflecting rising concerns over escalating trade tensions between the two countries.

Ministry spokesperson He Yongqian addressed the recent U.S. decision to double tariffs on imported steel, aluminum, and related products—from 25 percent to 50 percent. He criticized the move, emphasizing that it would not only inflict harm upon other nations but also negatively impact the United States itself. He stated, "Such actions will seriously disrupt the stability of global industrial and supply chains," underlining the interconnected nature of today’s international economy.

He further urged Washington to shift away from a zero-sum mentality and to engage in constructive dialogue to address mutual concerns. This, he said, is critical to preserving the overall stability of global industrial and supply chains, especially amid an environment where economic cooperation is essential for recovery and growth.

Looking back at the China-U.S. economic and trade talks held recently in Geneva, He affirmed that China has "earnestly fulfilled its obligations" and worked to uphold the consensus reached during these sessions. However, he expressed deep dissatisfaction with the U.S.'s subsequent imposition of new restrictions targeting China, arguing that such measures "blatantly undermine the consensus" and "grossly harm China's legitimate rights and interests."

He highlighted China’s strong opposition to these restrictions and issued a warning, stating that if the United States continues down this path, China will take firm and effective measures to protect its legitimate interests. The clear message signals a readiness for further action should trade tensions continue to escalate.

Reiterating China’s stance regarding Section 301 tariffs, the spokesperson emphasized that these duties ultimately translate into higher costs for U.S. businesses and consumers. He called for the complete revocation of Section 301 tariffs and other related restrictions, advocating for a more positive and stable trajectory in bilateral economic and trade relations.

The developments underscore the mounting pressure on both sides to find common ground and avoid further disruptions to global trade, as both countries play pivotal roles in international supply chains and economic growth.
