China's Leading Diplomat Holds High-Level Meeting with U.S. Ambassador to China Amid Rising Tensions
China's top diplomat holds crucial talks with U.S. ambassador amid escalating bilateral tensions.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi extended a formal welcome to David Perdue on Tuesday, marking Perdue's debut as the new ambassador of the United States to China. The high-level meeting in Beijing underscored the importance that both nations place on their diplomatic relations, particularly amid ongoing global uncertainties and recent tensions.
During their discussion, Wang Yi—who also serves as a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee—emphasized his hope that Ambassador Perdue would contribute actively to the healthy, steady, and sustainable development of China-U.S. ties. He highlighted the crucial role the ambassador can play as a reliable communicator, mediator of differences, and promoter of cooperation between the two countries.
"We are at a critical juncture," Wang stated, referencing the near half-century history since the two countries established diplomatic relations. He reflected on that shared journey and stressed that equality and respect are fundamental prerequisites for constructive engagement, while dialogue and cooperation remain the only viable pathways forward.
Wang further addressed recent developments following economic and trade talks held in Geneva. He affirmed that China has fully implemented the consensus reached with the United States, expressing regret that the U.S. had subsequently enacted measures perceived by Beijing as negative and unjustified. "China firmly opposes actions that infringe upon its legitimate rights and interests," Wang asserted, urging the United States to reconsider such approaches.
Calling for a renewed spirit of collaboration, Wang urged the U.S. to meet China halfway and to earnestly put into practice the important agreements made during the January phone call between the two heads of state. He emphasized the necessity for both sides to create the conditions needed for bilateral ties to return to a positive trajectory.
For his part, Ambassador Perdue conveyed President Donald Trump’s high level of respect for President Xi Jinping. He remarked on the significance of maintaining positive and constructive exchanges at the highest levels of leadership, acknowledging the powerful influence these dialogues have on the broader relationship.
Perdue also expressed his personal commitment as Washington’s top envoy in Beijing. He affirmed his willingness to maintain close communication with the Chinese government, advocating for continued mutual respect and open, attentive dialogue as the foundation for progress in U.S.-China relations.
