China's Railway Travel Booms Ahead of Dragon Boat Festival Holiday
China's top railway destinations reveal vibrant urban hubs like Beijing, Shanghai, and Chengdu, according to the national railway operator.

China's vast railway network is bracing for a massive wave of travelers as the Dragon Boat Festival holiday begins. On Saturday alone, an estimated 17.8 million passenger trips are expected, marking a significant surge in travel activity across the country. The influx highlights both the popularity of the festival and the crucial role of rail transport in connecting major cities during national holidays.
In response to the increased demand, authorities have scheduled 1,029 additional trains for Saturday, aiming to ensure that the flow of travelers remains smooth and efficient. According to the national railway operator, operations ran safely and efficiently on Friday as well, with approximately 15.78 million passengers transported without major incidents.
Major urban centers such as Beijing, Guangzhou, Shanghai, Chengdu, Hangzhou, Nanjing, and Zhengzhou have emerged as top destinations for holidaymakers this year. The popularity of these routes reflects ongoing trends in domestic tourism and vibrant economic activity during traditional festivals.
To further enhance the traveler experience, railway authorities have taken additional steps beyond simply increasing train frequency. Across the nation, stations have boosted service offerings and introduced a variety of cultural activities, creating a more welcoming and festive atmosphere for passengers. Enhanced staffing, better information systems, and improved amenities have also been put in place to accommodate the needs of the growing crowds.
Looking ahead, the national railway network is projected to handle a staggering 80.5 million passenger trips during the five-day holiday rush surrounding the Dragon Boat Festival. This remarkable figure underscores the resilience and capacity of China's transportation infrastructure, as well as the enduring importance of holiday reunions and travel in Chinese society.
