Colorado Terror Attack at 'Run for Their Lives' Event Demanding Release of Gaza Hostages

Authorities in Boulder, Colorado are investigating a violent attack that disrupted a pro-hostage-release event on Pearl Street, resulting in multiple injuries and heightened community concern. The incident unfolded Sunday afternoon as participants gathered for the "Run for Their Lives" event, organized to advocate for the release of individuals held captive by Hamas in the Gaza Strip. According to Boulder Police Chief Stephen Redfearn, officers received urgent reports of an individual brandishing a weapon and of people being set on fire.

Upon arrival, officers apprehended a male suspect at the scene, who reportedly suffered only minor injuries. The suspect remains in police custody as the investigation continues. Chief Redfearn refrained from confirming whether the attack specifically targeted members of the pro-Israel event or if bystanders were also at risk, stating that the area was bustling with both event attendees and unaffiliated passersby. He did, however, condemn the act, declaring, “this act is unacceptable.”

The attack shocked Boulder's Jewish community, which released a statement describing “an incendiary device” being hurled at walkers during the awareness-raising event. “We are saddened and heartbroken,” the statement read. “Our hearts go out to those who witnessed this horrible attack, and prayers for a speedy recovery to those who were injured.” Witnesses recounted seeing Molotov cocktails used in the assault, further compounding fears of escalating violence at gatherings meant to promote messages of peace and hostage release.

While the group behind the event, "Run for Their Lives," has roots in the Bay Area and collaborates with global advocacy organizations, their focus remains on advocacy and awareness, emphasizing that “all people around the world should be disturbed by this crisis.” The organization maintains that its events are motivated solely by the goal of bringing hostages home, irrespective of political or military means.

Multiple Jewish groups and anti-hate organizations have expressed alarm and solidarity following the incident, with some noting the troubling rise in anti-Jewish sentiment and attacks nationally. Law enforcement officials are moving cautiously in their public statements, mindful of broader tensions and awaiting more information before labeling the incident as an act of terrorism or hate crime.

Chief Redfearn underlined the uncertainty surrounding the motive, stating, “I cannot confirm right now that this was targeted at a specific group of people. We understand that there’s a lot of tensions right now and a lot of issues in the United States and everywhere. Once we have a clear motive, we will react accordingly.” The police response remains ongoing as investigators attempt to determine the intentions behind the attack and ensure the safety of the Boulder community.
