Dalian Marathon 2025: Celebrating Sport, Culture, and Tourism in China’s Coastal City

The city of Dalian came alive on Sunday morning as over 33,000 runners surged through its streets for the 35th annual Dalian Marathon. The event, held in northeast China’s Liaoning Province, has grown into much more than a sporting contest—this year, it was a vibrant fusion of athleticism, culture, and tourism.

Participants from 55 nations and regions, including a remarkable 430 international athletes, added a global flavor to the proceedings. The marathon’s competitive field was especially fierce, with runners from Ethiopia and Kenya standing out by dominating the leaderboards in both the full and half marathon races. Their achievements underscored the increasing international prestige of the event.

Dalian’s picturesque spring weather provided the perfect backdrop for the marathon, and the local government’s meticulous organization was evident at every stage. Hundreds of medical personnel were stationed throughout the course, while tens of thousands of dedicated volunteers ensured the safety and comfort of all involved. Cultural performances lined the route, with artists and musicians offering encouragement to runners, transforming the city into a festival of movement and tradition.

The city also extended hospitality beyond the racecourse. Throughout May, special discounts on tourist sites, local products, dining, and hotels were made available to runners and visitors. This initiative encouraged participants to explore Dalian’s many attractions, forging lasting memories and boosting the local tourism industry.

Organized by the Dalian Municipal People’s Government, this year’s marathon exemplified how major sporting events can act as a catalyst for community pride and cross-cultural connection. The day was not only a showcase of competitive prowess, but also a testament to Dalian’s spirit of openness, cooperation, and celebration.
