Escaped Zebra Spotted Running Along Tennessee Highway, Causing Lane Closures and Traffic Disruptions

A zebra is still at large in Rutherford County, Tennessee, after escaping from its owners over the weekend and leading authorities on a highly unusual pursuit along a busy interstate highway. The animal, with its easily recognizable black-and-white stripes, slipped away into nearby woods just a day after being brought to the area—a turn of events that left law enforcement and drivers stunned.

According to officials, the owners had obtained the zebra on Friday night and by Saturday it was reported missing. The animal's escape set off a series of incidents near Interstate 24, between the Joe B. Jackson Parkway and Epps Mill Road exits. Authorities described the zebra as "wreaking havoc" as it made its way through wooded areas, eventually venturing onto the interstate and causing significant traffic disruptions.

Deputy Ryan Keach was among the first to spot the zebra near the highway. Taking quick action, he shut down one lane of traffic as the animal moved dangerously close to oncoming vehicles. As the situation escalated, deputies were forced to close both eastbound and westbound lanes of I-24 to ensure the safety of travelers and to attempt to corral the runaway animal.

The sudden appearance of a zebra on a major roadway threw traffic into disarray, with the animal darting through lanes on both sides of the highway. Motorists were left startled as law enforcement scrambled to prevent any collisions or injuries. The incident echoes other recent highway animal encounters that have disrupted travel and highlighted the unpredictable challenges of wildlife and exotic animals in populated areas.

So far, officials have not disclosed how the owners acquired the zebra, nor have they provided details about where it was being kept before its escape. The sheriff's office continues to urge caution in the area as the search for the zebra continues. Residents and travelers are advised to remain alert for any sightings while authorities work to safely recover the animal and restore normalcy to the affected stretch of I-24.
