Escaped Zebra Spotted Running Along Tennessee Highway Causing Traffic Chaos and Lane Closures
Tennessee authorities scramble to contain a zebra on the loose that is causing traffic chaos on Interstate 24.

A zebra remains at large in Rutherford County, Tennessee, after making a daring escape over the weekend, according to local authorities. The animal, known for its distinct black-and-white stripes, reportedly broke away from its owners only a day after they had acquired it, prompting immediate concerns from law enforcement and area residents alike.
The owners had "obtained" the zebra late Friday night and realized it was missing by Saturday morning. Law enforcement officials said the animal managed to slip away into the wooded areas adjacent to Interstate 24, where it was soon spotted causing commotion between the Joe B. Jackson Parkway and Epps Mill Road exits. The sheriff's office described the situation as the zebra "wreaking havoc," as it darted between trees and eventually bolted toward the busy freeway.
Deputy Ryan Keach responded quickly to reports of the errant zebra and located the animal near the interstate. To protect both the animal and passing motorists, officials temporarily shut down one lane and then expanded closures to halt all traffic in both directions. Authorities emphasized that these measures were necessary after the zebra crossed the interstate, creating a dangerous situation for drivers traveling both eastbound toward Chattanooga and westbound toward Nashville.
Eyewitnesses described chaotic scenes as the zebra weaved unpredictably through moving vehicles, with some motorists stopping abruptly to avoid collisions. Authorities worked meticulously to maintain order and prevent accidents, recognizing the severe risks posed by an unexpected large animal loose on a major highway.
Despite the significant effort to contain the situation, the zebra managed to evade capture and, as of Monday morning, continues to move freely in the area. Officials have not disclosed details about how the animal was acquired or specifics regarding its housing at the time of the escape. The search is ongoing, with residents and commuters urged to remain alert and report any sightings of the runaway zebra to law enforcement.
