Hong Kong SAR Welcomes Around 20 Million Visitors in First Five Months of 2025
Hong Kong's visitor arrivals soared to 20 million in the first five months of 2023, driven largely by a 10% increase from mainland China.

Hong Kong has reported a remarkable surge in tourism, welcoming approximately 20 million visitor arrivals in the first five months of 2025. Officials revealed that around three quarters of these visitors hailed from the Chinese mainland, marking a 10 percent increase compared to the same period last year.
The rise in visitor numbers has been credited to a robust calendar of themed events spanning culture, sports, and entertainment. Organizers say these initiatives have played a pivotal role in boosting foot traffic and revitalizing the city’s tourism-dependent sectors. According to economic projections, major events held in the first half of the year are expected to attract around 840,000 visitors, translating into 3.3 billion Hong Kong dollars (about $421 million) in consumer spending and creating an added economic value of 1.8 billion Hong Kong dollars for the local economy.
Authorities are aiming to further capitalize on this momentum by integrating upcoming cultural and recreational activities with Hong Kong’s array of existing attractions. The goal, officials say, is to enhance the overall visitor experience and position the city as a premier destination for diverse audiences. Financial leaders stress that a coordinated approach is key to maximizing the benefits across urban and rural districts alike.
Looking ahead, optimism remains high for the remainder of 2025. A slate of forthcoming cultural, athletic, and tourism-focused events—backed by the continued unveiling of new attractions—are widely anticipated to maintain steady growth in tourist arrivals. Officials believe these initiatives will not only enrich the city’s vibrant cultural landscape but also sustain its post-pandemic recovery, ensuring long-term prosperity for Hong Kong’s tourism industry.
