House Democrats Attempt to Shift Blame to Trump for Los Angeles Violence Amid Months of Anti-ICE Rhetoric
Democrats accuse Trump administration of "baiting" violence in L.A. amid rising tensions over anti-ICE rhetoric.

Democratic lawmakers sharply criticized President Donald Trump on Monday in the wake of violent clashes in Los Angeles over the weekend, laying responsibility for the disorder squarely at the feet of the White House. The controversy erupted after a series of protests targeting Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) escalated into chaos, with demonstrators hurling projectiles at law enforcement and cars set ablaze in the city’s downtown, according to eyewitnesses and officials.
Protesters have been rallying in response to ongoing ICE operations throughout Los Angeles, reflecting a wider national backlash against recent immigration raids. Many demonstrations began peacefully but ended in confrontation, as scenes of masked activists waving Mexican flags, burning vehicles, and graffitied city streets quickly circulated online and drew national attention. The situation intensified when President Trump ordered the deployment of National Guard troops to support federal agents, a move California Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass openly opposed.
“The Trump administration is baiting unrest instead of working to bring our nation together,” charged Rep. Adriano Espaillat, D-N.Y., in a statement posted to social media. Democratic leaders have accused the president of intentionally stoking division and violence as a distraction from other pressing issues, including inflation and turmoil within his own administration. Rep. Stephen Lynch, D-Mass., echoed this sentiment, arguing that the president was seeking “violent confrontation” to divert public focus and exacerbate political tensions.
Republicans were quick to respond, however, blasting what they described as Democrats’ selective outrage and reluctance to denounce lawlessness. “For weeks now, the Left has been spewing anti-ICE rhetoric, leading to riots in LA. Trump is calling for law and order. The Left is defending chaos because it fits their narrative,” said Rep. Jeff Crank, R-Colo. Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., further accused Democrats of turning a blind eye to those who enter the country illegally, regardless of alleged ties to criminal organizations.
The controversy comes amid a sustained nationwide debate over immigration enforcement, with ICE recently breaking arrest records under new directives from the Trump administration. In Colorado, for example, the agency focused operations on areas with high levels of reported gang activity. Yet in Los Angeles, the mass raids have mobilized local communities and inflamed already tense relations between residents and federal authorities.
Some Democratic officials have actively joined protest activities. Rep. Pramila Jayapal, D-Wash., has been a prominent voice at rallies across the country, urging demonstrators to maintain non-violent discipline even as, in her words, “the Trump Administration escalates violence.” She and Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., are scheduled to headline a rally in Washington, D.C., calling for an end to ICE actions that target immigrant workers.
The sharp partisan divide has only deepened in the aftermath of the Los Angeles unrest. As images of scorched vehicles and shattered windows continue to circulate, both sides accuse the other of fueling extremism for political gain. “Americans are seeing this with their own eyes and they know who needs to be held accountable,” warned Rep. Issa. Meanwhile, Gov. Newsom insisted, “Trump sent troops anyway – to manufacture chaos and violence… Now things are destabilized and we need to send in more law enforcement just to clean up Trump’s mess.”
With ICE continuing its operations and public protests showing no sign of abating, the standoff between the White House and its critics looks set to remain a flashpoint in the national conversation over immigration and civil unrest.
