Inspirational 85-Year-Old Cancer Survivor Embarks on Journey from Toronto to Niagara Falls
At 85, Dennis Starkey cycles 200 km in Ride to Conquer Cancer, exemplifying resilience and inspiring hope after battling cancer twice.

Dennis Starkey first joined the Ride to Conquer Cancer a decade ago, hoping the intense cycling challenge would push him toward better health. What began as a fitness journey soon took on a far deeper meaning, as Starkey was diagnosed and subsequently battled cancer—not once, but twice—over the next ten years.
Now, at 85 years old, Starkey has just completed the grueling 200-kilometre ride, an accomplishment he never imagined possible when his journey began. “It’s not just about the distance,” Starkey shared after crossing the finish line. “It’s about showing myself and others that life goes on, no matter what you face.” His remarkable resilience has made him an inspiration to fellow riders and supporters lining the route.
The Ride to Conquer Cancer has become one of the region’s largest fundraising events, supporting groundbreaking research and patient care at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre. Participants often share emotional stories of survival, loss, and hope as they pedal through challenging terrain. For Starkey, this year’s ride was his most meaningful yet. “To be here, healthy and strong enough to ride, is something I’m incredibly grateful for,” he said. Starkey credits dedicated medical teams, supportive family, and the cycling community for helping him keep moving forward.
Organizers say the event's enduring success comes from stories like Starkey’s, proving that age and adversity are no match for determination and community support. As the event wrapped up, volunteers and spectators cheered as Starkey completed his ride, many moved to tears by his achievement. His story stands as a testament to perseverance, giving hope to countless others facing their own battles with cancer.
