Iran Reports No Change in U.S. Sanctions Stance Amid Ongoing Diplomatic Talks
Iran reports no shift in U.S. sanctions stance amid ongoing negotiations

The Iranian Foreign Ministry announced on Monday that it is closely watching for any shift in the United States' stance regarding longstanding sanctions, as high-stakes negotiations continue between the two countries. These discussions aim to settle persistent concerns surrounding Iran's nuclear program, an issue that has strained relations for decades.
Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei addressed reporters during a weekly press conference in Tehran, emphasizing that there has not yet been any clear indication from Washington concerning the lifting or modification of sanctions. "I regret to inform you that the American side has not yet been willing to clarify this issue," Baghaei stated, underlining the critical role that sanction relief plays in moving the talks forward.
Baghaei further underscored that transparency and guarantees about the removal of what he termed 'oppressive sanctions' are essential prerequisites for Iran to consider any potential agreement. He noted, "It must be clear to us how the oppressive sanctions against the Iranian people will be lifted, to ensure that past experiences are not repeated." This remark appeared to reference previous deals in which Iran has claimed Western parties failed to uphold their end of the bargain.
Diplomatic efforts have recently intensified, with Oman's Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr Albusaidi playing a key role in mediation. Over the weekend, Albusaidi visited Tehran to present details of a new U.S. proposal aimed at breaking the deadlock. His shuttle diplomacy comes at a pivotal time, as both sides seek a breakthrough following months of stalemate.
Despite the flurry of activity, progress remains halting. Iranian and U.S. negotiators concluded a fifth round of talks in Rome last month—discussions some observers saw as a modest step forward but far from conclusive. One of the most contentious points remains Iran’s uranium enrichment activities, with Western officials demanding strict limitations and Iranian leaders insisting on their country’s right to peaceful nuclear development.
With the stakes high for both nations, all eyes remain on whether Washington will offer the assurances requested by Tehran, paving the way for a comprehensive deal—or whether the impasse over sanctions will continue to cloud the prospects for a diplomatic breakthrough.
