Marine Rescues Passenger Attempting to Open Emergency Exit Mid-Flight

A routine transpacific flight from Tokyo to Houston took a dramatic turn when a U.S. Marine sergeant major intervened to stop an unruly passenger allegedly attempting to open an emergency exit door mid-flight. The incident, which occurred aboard Flight 114, prompted an emergency diversion to Seattle-Tacoma International Airport and underscored the quick-thinking bravery of both military personnel and flight crew.
According to accounts provided by Sergeant Major Jody Armentrout, a veteran with more than two decades in the Marines, suspicions were first raised when he noticed a fellow passenger exhibiting unusual behavior. The man was seen moving his backpack between multiple bathrooms and pacing nervously up and down the aisle. This erratic conduct prompted Armentrout to maintain vigilance as the flight cruised over the Pacific.
The situation escalated when the suspicious individual began fixating on the emergency exit door closest to Armentrout’s seat. "He came out of the bathroom and his eyes… you could definitely tell there was something going on," said Armentrout. When the man abruptly attempted to grab the door’s strap, Armentrout acted within seconds, physically intercepting the suspect, slamming him to the floor, and restraining him—actions that likely averted a potentially catastrophic scenario.
Another passenger, an older gentleman seated nearby, quickly assisted in the effort. Flight attendants then handed zip ties to Armentrout, who secured the man’s wrists and fastened him to a seat for the remainder of the journey. Armentrout maintained a watchful presence beside the subdued passenger until the aircraft landed.
This tense episode forced the pilot to divert the aircraft to Seattle, where federal and local law enforcement met the plane on the tarmac. Authorities confirmed that the main suspect was taken to a local hospital for medical evaluation following the incident. During the unscheduled stop, a separate disturbance occurred involving another passenger, who was also removed by police after becoming agitated and striking a bathroom door.
Once order was restored, Flight 114 resumed its course and landed safely in Houston without further issues. No criminal charges have yet been filed, though authorities indicated that prosecutors are currently reviewing all reports and eyewitness testimony to determine whether federal prosecution is warranted.
All Nippon Airways, the airline operating the flight, emphasized their commitment to passenger safety and expressed gratitude for the coordinated response by the crew and law enforcement. “The safety of our passengers and crew are our top priority, and we applaud the efforts of local law enforcement for their support,” an airline spokesperson stated.
