Markham Youth Sports Coach Arrested and Charged with Sexual Assault, Police Investigate

A youth sports coach in Markham has been arrested and charged in relation to an alleged series of sexual assaults spanning nearly a decade, authorities confirmed this week.

Police launched their investigation in May 2025 after a victim stepped forward, providing details about repeated incidents of sexual assault by a male coach. These assaults are believed to have occurred between 2015 and 2024, a period during which the victim was reportedly under 16 years old when the abuse began.

On June 5, officers took 58-year-old Garth Morris of Markham into custody. Morris now faces multiple serious charges, including invitation to sexual touching under 16 years of age, sexual interference with a person under 16 years of age, sexual assault, and sexual exploitation. Authorities emphasized the severity of the allegations given the age of the victim at the onset of the incidents.

According to investigators, Morris has been involved as a coach for youth basketball, tennis, and volleyball teams in the Markham area. His long-standing engagement with various local sports organizations places him in contact with numerous young athletes over the years.

In light of the charges, police have released a photograph of Morris, urging anyone who may have additional information or may themselves be victims to come forward. Investigators believe there may be more victims who have not yet spoken with authorities. The ongoing investigation aims to provide support for any others affected and ensure the safety of youth in local sports programs.

Police encourage parents, guardians, and community members to speak with children involved in sports about appropriate conduct from adults, and to report any suspicious behavior to law enforcement as soon as possible.
