Recognized as an outstanding leader of the People's Liberation Army, Xu was renowned for his loyalty and dedication. He was praised as an excellent CPC member and a tested, steadfast communist soldier. Many hailed him as a proletarian military strategist, underscoring his lasting impact on China’s military doctrine and modernization efforts.

In the days following his passing, key figures including President Xi, Li Qiang, Zhao Leji, Wang Huning, Cai Qi, Ding Xuexiang, Li Xi, Han Zheng, and Hu Jintao either visited Xu during his hospitalization or sent messages of condolence, further highlighting the deep respect and admiration he commanded across generations of leadership.
