Republicans Rally Behind Trump and Musk Amid Intense "Big, Beautiful" Brawl
House Republicans react to Elon Musk’s sharp criticism of the spending bill, calling it a “disgusting abomination.”

A fierce clash unfolded on social media Thursday as President Donald Trump and tech billionaire Elon Musk publicly exchanged sharp accusations following months of apparent collaboration on government efficiency reforms. The spat sent shockwaves through political circles, sparking a flurry of responses from Republican lawmakers who largely maintained their support for both men despite the escalating rhetoric.
House Republicans swiftly rallied behind President Trump in the aftermath of Musk’s provocative remarks. Representative Anna Paulina Luna of Florida voiced strong support for the president, stating, “Obviously, I have President Trump's back. I don't think that he should be impeached. Do I think that he was on the Jeffrey Epstein island? I don't think so.” Luna’s comments referenced Musk’s recent calls for Trump's impeachment and his suggestion that Trump’s name appeared in the controversial Epstein files. Nevertheless, Luna conceded that Musk is “not a terrible person,” and acknowledged that both Trump and Musk have made significant contributions to the Republican Party.
Other GOP lawmakers echoed Luna’s sentiments while condemning the personal attacks. Representative Chip Roy of Texas criticized Musk’s allegations, remarking, “I assure you he crossed the line on what he said about the sitting president of the United States today.” Despite this, Roy was quick to distinguish between the online feud and Musk’s track record on fiscal policy. He praised Musk’s work in cutting government waste through the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), noting, “The bottom line is, we have a job to do. Elon is doing a great job in terms of the rescissions and the DOGE cuts they identified... But you know, guys, keep it in the lines.”
Representative Ralph Norman of South Carolina weighed in on the fallout, commending President Trump for his leadership and expressing optimism about a reconciliation, “What's broken apart can be put back together, but you've got two strong personalities.” Meanwhile, others like Representative Tim Burchett of Tennessee downplayed the intensity of the dispute, quipping, “They're the two biggest dogs in the pound. They're going to fight.” Representative Burgess Owens of Utah added that tensions are likely to cool over time, saying, “It's going to settle down at some point.”
The White House responded to the controversy by attributing Musk’s outburst to dissatisfaction with President Trump’s flagship spending bill. Press secretary Karoline Leavitt contended that the bill’s focus on middle- and working-class tax relief left Musk and his companies dissatisfied. Leavitt asserted, “This is an unfortunate episode from Elon, who is unhappy with the One Big Beautiful Bill because it does not include the policies he wanted. The president is focused on passing this historic piece of legislation and making our country great again.”
The online confrontation escalated after Musk posted a scathing critique of the new spending bill, describing it as a “massive, outrageous, pork-filled Congressional spending bill” and a “disgusting abomination.” Musk admonished lawmakers supporting the bill, insisting, “Shame on those who voted for it: you know you did wrong. You know it.”
Despite the harsh words, Republican leaders appear determined to maintain unity and focus on their legislative agenda. With both Trump and Musk recognized as influential, albeit polarizing, figures in conservative politics, leaders within the party are signaling a desire to move past the spat and re-center attention on issues of government reform and fiscal responsibility.
