Sport Fishing Boat Crashes into Meschutt Beach Jetty, Injuring Four Coast Guard Responds

A dramatic boating accident occurred late Monday evening off Meschutt Beach, when a large sport fishing boat violently crashed into a jetty, according to eyewitness reports and authorities. The incident unfolded at approximately 9:16 p.m., as the vessel approached the entrance to the Shinnecock Canal from the Great Peconic Bay.

Eyewitnesses described the collision as forceful enough to spin the boat 180 degrees before it ran aground on the jetty. Video footage captured in the aftermath shows the battered craft surrounded by first responders, country music audibly playing from the boat’s speakers and its windshield wipers still running, while an adult male appears to be questioned—or possibly detained—by authorities.

Emergency services responded swiftly to the scene. Personnel from Hampton Bays Fire Department, Southampton Town Police Department, the United States Coast Guard, and New York State Police worked together to secure the area and assist the injured.

According to initial reports, four occupants of the vessel sustained injuries. An adult female with serious injuries was airlifted by the Suffolk County Police Department to Stony Brook Hospital. Two juveniles were transported to medical facilities by ambulance, while a fourth victim, an adult male, was taken to a local hospital for treatment. The extent of their injuries has not been officially disclosed.

The precise cause of the crash remains under investigation. Authorities have yet to release information regarding possible impairment or other contributing factors in the operator’s navigation of the vessel.

Local officials stated that a full inquiry is ongoing, and the condition of the boat’s passengers will be monitored as the investigation progresses. Attempts to reach the Hampton Bays Fire Department for comment have so far been unsuccessful.

Residents and boaters in the area are reminded to exercise caution, especially near jetties and canal entrances, as the summer boating season brings increased traffic to Long Island waterways.
