Tragic Hiker Found Dead in Maine as Search Continues for Missing 28-Year-Old Daughter

A tragic outcome unfolded on Mount Katahdin in Maine as a 58-year-old hiker was found deceased near the summit, while his 28-year-old daughter remains missing, despite extensive search efforts, authorities reported Tuesday.

The discovery of Tim Keiderling’s body occurred at approximately 2:45 p.m. on the Tableland, just below the prominent summit of Mount Katahdin. Rescue teams are continuing their search for his daughter, Esther Keiderling, who has not been seen since the pair began their hike. Both were residents of Ulster Park, New York, and had set out from the Abol Campground around 10:15 a.m. on Sunday with the goal of reaching Katahdin’s peak, the iconic northern end of the Appalachian Trail within Baxter State Park.

The alert for the missing hikers was raised Monday morning after park officials discovered the Keiderlings’ vehicle still parked at the trailhead. Within hours, an intense, multi-agency operation was underway, involving more than 30 Maine Game Wardens, K-9 units, specialized search and rescue teams, helicopters from the Maine Forest Service, and resources from the Maine Army National Guard. The difficult terrain and unpredictable weather on Mount Katahdin have posed significant challenges to search and recovery efforts.

Tim Keiderling’s sudden passing has left his family in mourning. His brother, Joe Keiderling, described the loss as devastating, stating, “My heart is broken for [Tim’s] wife and children.” He remembered Tim as someone who lived exuberantly, cherished people and life deeply, and was known for his rich sense of humor and storytelling abilities. The family is now holding onto hope and faith for Esther’s safe return, expressing deep gratitude to the first responders working relentlessly across the hazardous mountain landscape.

As search operations continue, both the Hunt and Abol Trails have been temporarily closed to the public to facilitate easier access for emergency crews and ensure safety. Hikers are being urged to heed these closures and exercise extreme caution in the area.

Baxter State Park officials emphasize that Mount Katahdin is regarded as a “very strenuous climb,” requiring between eight and twelve hours for a typical round trip. At nearly 5,270 feet, Katahdin is Maine’s tallest peak and renowned for its challenging conditions, even for experienced hikers. The incident serves as a sobering reminder of the mountain's demanding environment and the importance of thorough preparation for those venturing into its wilderness.

Authorities remain committed to locating Esther Keiderling and urge anyone with information or sightings to come forward as efforts intensify in the coming days.
