US Issues Updated Travel Advisory for Popular Destination Amid 'Terrorism Fears'—Advise Visitors to 'Exercise Increased Caution'
U.S. issues travel advisory for Italy over rising terrorism threats ahead of summer travel season.

As summer approaches, the U.S. Department of State has renewed its warning for Americans planning to travel to Italy, a perennially popular destination for tourists. On May 23, the department reissued a Level 2 travel advisory, urging travelers to "exercise increased caution" due to ongoing risks associated with terrorism.
According to the advisory, there is a credible risk of terrorist attacks or related activities in Italy. Officials cautioned that attacks could occur with little or no warning, and noted that potential targets include a wide range of public spaces frequented by locals and visitors alike. These locations include tourist landmarks, transportation hubs, shopping centers, government buildings, hotels, restaurants, religious sites, parks, sports venues, cultural events, educational institutions, airports, and other public areas.
The State Department's message emphasizes the importance of vigilance, especially in popular tourist spots. Travelers are advised to monitor local media for urgent updates, to remain aware of their surroundings, and to be prepared to adapt their plans as needed in case of emergency situations. The advisory also encourages Americans abroad to develop contingency plans and to stay informed about local developments that may impact their safety.
To help travelers stay connected and facilitate assistance in case of emergencies, the department recommends enrolling in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP). This free service enables U.S. citizens traveling or living abroad to receive real-time messages and security alerts from the nearest U.S. embassy, making it easier for authorities to locate and assist travelers if necessary.
Italy's Level 2 advisory, which has been in effect since April 2022, remains unchanged despite ongoing concerns over potential threats in public areas. The country remains one of the most visited destinations in Europe, known for its rich history, cultural landmarks, and culinary attractions. The State Department's issuance comes amid heightened caution surrounding potential attacks in other European countries as well. France, Germany, Spain, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom all currently share similar Level 2 advisories, urging American travelers to exercise increased caution due to the risk of terrorism.
In May, the State Department issued travel advisories for 21 countries around the globe, spanning from Level 1 (Exercise Normal Precautions) to Level 4 (Do Not Travel). Advisory levels are regularly reviewed — every 12 months for Levels 1 and 2, and at least every six months for Levels 3 and 4 — and updated promptly if conditions change significantly.
A State Department spokesperson reiterated the agency’s commitment to the safety and security of U.S. citizens overseas. "We take seriously our commitment to provide U.S. citizens with clear, timely, and reliable information about every country in the world so they can make informed travel decisions," the spokesperson stated. The department continually assesses safety information and ongoing developments to ensure that advisories reflect the latest available data.
Italy holds the distinction of possessing the highest number of World Heritage Sites in the world, with a total of 54. While known primarily for its cultural significance and tourism appeal, the country's political system has experienced volatility in recent years, with a populist coalition rising to power in 2018.
The State Department continues to review advisories and provides updated guidance as needed to help travelers assess risks and make informed decisions when considering international travel this summer.
