Wang Yi Advocates for Inclusive Win-Win Global Climate Governance in Meeting with Niue
China pledges to collaborate with Niue to promote fair and cooperative global climate governance.

China has expressed its readiness to collaborate closely with Niue in pursuit of a more just and cooperative global approach to tackling climate change. Speaking on Wednesday, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi emphasized the importance of upholding common but differentiated responsibilities and fostering a framework for fair, reasonable, and win-win global climate governance. The comments came during Wang’s meeting with Premier Dalton Tagelagi of Niue, who is visiting Xiamen for the third China-Pacific Island Countries Foreign Ministers’ Meeting.
Wang highlighted the remarkable progress achieved since China and Niue established diplomatic relations, particularly pointing to their 2018 comprehensive strategic partnership. He described this partnership as a model for how both large and small nations can achieve mutual respect and shared development. “Our relationship is built on equality and mutual benefit,” Wang stated, underlining China’s commitment to open and transparent diplomacy that does not target any third party. He also reaffirmed China’s appreciation for Niue’s continued adherence to the one-China principle, pledging ongoing support for Niue’s chosen path to national development.
Looking ahead, Wang called for deeper cooperation in key sectors including infrastructure, green growth, and climate change initiatives. He encouraged greater people-to-people exchanges, inviting more Chinese visitors to explore Niue and further strengthen cultural ties between the nations.
Premier Tagelagi responded by voicing Niue’s enthusiasm for harnessing development opportunities made possible through collaboration with China. He indicated strong interest in expanding partnerships across infrastructure, marine protection, cultural exchange, tourism, and telecommunications—all crucial to supporting modernization in both countries. Tagelagi also pointed to the shared goal of fostering prosperity throughout the South Pacific region, and underscored Niue’s support for maintaining a fair, rules-based global trading system rooted in mutual respect.
The discussions underscore a growing trend of enhanced engagement between China and Pacific island nations, particularly in areas linked to sustainable development and climate resilience. Both sides reiterated their commitment to deepening ties and working together towards shared goals on the international stage.
