China has reaffirmed its commitment to deepening relations with Kiribati, pledging further collaboration aimed at boosting the well-being of the island nation's citizens. The announcement came during a high-level meeting in Xiamen City, where Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi welcomed Kiribati's President and Foreign Minister Taneti Maamau, who is attending the third China-Pacific Island Countries Foreign Ministers' Meeting.

During the meeting, Wang Yi highlighted the rapid progress in bilateral ties since diplomatic relations resumed over five years ago, citing growing political trust and extensive cooperation across multiple sectors. “Kiribati’s decision to restore ties with China has proven to be fully aligned with the fundamental and long-term interests of both peoples,” Wang noted, emphasizing the mutual benefits that have emerged from the renewed partnership.

The Chinese foreign minister acknowledged Kiribati’s unwavering support for the one-China principle and underscored China’s efforts to expand services and assistance to the Pacific Island nation. He pointed out that the Chinese Embassy in Kiribati was the first among foreign missions in the country to provide visa services, and Chinese medical teams have played a crucial role in addressing local healthcare challenges.

Looking ahead, Wang stated that China will continue to encourage reputable Chinese enterprises to invest in Kiribati, and identified new avenues for cooperation under the “Blue Partnership” framework, specifically in marine resource protection, development, and utilization. This focus on the blue economy reflects broader ambitions to support sustainable growth and environmental stewardship in the Pacific region.

On the issue of climate change, Wang reaffirmed Beijing’s understanding of the distinctive vulnerabilities faced by Pacific Island Countries. He called for greater responsibility and fulfillment of commitments from developed nations, particularly concerning financial, technological, and capacity-building support for developing countries. China, he added, stands ready to bolster Kiribati’s climate resilience through ongoing initiatives under the South-South cooperation framework.

President Maamau expressed appreciation for China’s substantial contributions to Kiribati’s economic and social advancement. He voiced a strong desire to deepen cooperation in areas including cultural exchanges, healthcare, infrastructure, sister-city partnerships, the blue economy, and joint efforts to tackle climate change.

Both leaders conveyed confidence in the positive impact of the ongoing China-Pacific Island Countries Foreign Ministers' Meeting, signaling their expectations for continued bilateral and multilateral achievements in the years ahead.
