Xi Jinping and Myanmar Leader Celebrate 75 Years of Diplomatic Relations Between China and Myanmar

Chinese President Xi Jinping and Myanmar leader Min Aung Hlaing marked a major diplomatic milestone on Sunday, as the two leaders exchanged congratulations to commemorate the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Myanmar.

In his congratulatory message, President Xi reflected on the resilient ties that have characterized the relationship between the two neighboring countries for more than seven decades. He described the enduring "Paukphaw" or fraternal friendship as having withstood the test of time and only grown stronger. Xi emphasized that China and Myanmar, guided by the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence and the Bandung Spirit, have remained committed to good neighborliness, deepened mutually beneficial cooperation, and firmly supported each other on fundamental issues related to their respective national interests and priorities.

Highlighting the progress in bilateral ties, Xi recalled his recent meeting with Min Aung Hlaing in Russia in May, where they achieved consensus on building a closer China-Myanmar community with a shared future. Xi stated that China places great importance on further developing relations with Myanmar and expressed readiness to leverage the anniversary as an opportunity to accelerate high-quality cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative. He also pointed to joint efforts to advance initiatives such as the Global Development Initiative, the Global Security Initiative, and the Global Civilization Initiative, all aimed at fostering greater benefits for both peoples.

From the Myanmar side, Min Aung Hlaing credited Xi's landmark visit to Myanmar in 2020 with opening a new chapter in the partnership between the two nations. He expressed gratitude for China’s swift humanitarian response following a powerful earthquake in Myanmar earlier this year, calling it a clear demonstration of the profound friendship and mutual support between the two peoples in times of crisis. The Myanmar leader described his talks with Xi in Moscow as highly productive, noting that both parties reached important agreements on deepening strategic cooperation.

Min Aung Hlaing also acknowledged China’s steadfast support for Myanmar’s ongoing efforts towards peace, stability, national reconciliation, and economic development. Looking to the future, he expressed hopes of accelerating collaboration across a broad range of fields and building a stronger, more resilient partnership with China.

The day’s commemorations also included an exchange of congratulations between Chinese Premier Li Qiang and Min Aung Hlaing. Li highlighted that over the past 75 years, the two nations have made significant progress in practical cooperation and friendly exchanges across various sectors. The Chinese premier reiterated his commitment to working closely with Myanmar to deepen comprehensive strategic cooperation and maintain steady progress toward a community with a shared future.

Min Aung Hlaing responded by reaffirming the importance of the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence, which continue to underpin the stable growth of Myanmar-China relations. He voiced enthusiasm for jointly building a community with a shared future, aiming to ensure continued prosperity and mutual benefit for both countries in the years ahead.
