Xinjiang Emerges as Trending Destination for China Travel in 2024
Xinjiang's Silk Road allure draws record numbers of tourists with visa-free access and new flights boosting visitor influx.

Northwest China’s Xinjiang region is rapidly emerging as one of the most sought-after travel destinations, captivating both domestic and international tourists with its rich Silk Road heritage and breathtaking natural landscapes. As the global interest in “China Travel” surges, more visitors are setting their sights on Xinjiang for an immersive experience that seamlessly blends history, culture, and scenic wonders.
Kashgar, a city deeply entrenched in Silk Road legacy, stands at the forefront of this tourism wave. International travelers are flocking to its bustling streets, drawn by the city’s unique architectural gems, vibrant markets, and the promise of authentic local flavors. The allure of Kashgar lies not just in its monuments, but in its living history—where age-old caravan trails map themselves onto modern city life and teahouses invite visitors to unwind while listening to echoes of the past.
Centuries-old bazaars that once welcomed traders and explorers like Marco Polo now attract curious globetrotters eager to experience the cultural mosaic that defines Kashgar. The intertwining of traditional Uyghur crafts, aromatic spices, and legendary street food creates an atmosphere where heritage is not just preserved, but actively celebrated. Tourists can wander cobblestone alleys, admire intricate woodwork and tiled facades, and indulge in culinary traditions shaped by thousands of years of trade and migration.
“I love Kashgar. I think more people should visit. My favorite foods have been the breads—the ‘nang’ breads—and also the noodles. They’re known for their wheat noodles here, so I recommend trying dishes of noodles. And I would love to come and visit again, and I think other people should visit again,” remarked Arlinda, a visitor from Albania who praised the region’s hospitality and distinct cuisine.
The Xinjiang region has made significant strides toward increasing accessibility for foreign travelers. New visa-free policies and expanded air routes have made it easier than ever for tourists to discover the wonders of this vast region. Urumqi, the regional capital, now boasts direct connections to 23 regions in 20 countries—including Central Asian neighbors Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, and Kyrgyzstan—across 26 international flight routes. This enhanced connectivity is credited with facilitating seamless travel and boosting Xinjiang’s profile as a global destination.
“This is my second trip to China. Everything is convenient, and the people are welcoming. And I also love the amazing food here. If I have any problem during my trip, it can be resolved quickly,” shared Sullidin, a tourist from Azerbaijan, emphasizing the ease of travel and warm reception he encountered throughout his journey.
With its unrivaled blend of history, culture, and hospitality, Xinjiang continues to make headlines as a must-visit gem for adventurous travelers seeking unique stories and unforgettable experiences along the ancient Silk Road.
