Zongzi Leaves Symbolize Prosperity and Good Fortune: Traditional Path to Prosperity
Yashipu farmers gear up for zongzi leaf harvest to meet rising Dragon Boat Festival demand.

As the humid days of early summer settle in across Hainan Province, the villagers of Yashipu are busy harvesting lush, green zongzi leaves—a symbol of both tradition and economic growth. With the Dragon Boat Festival approaching, families in Yashipu Village, Tunchang County, work from dawn to dusk, carefully gathering the aromatic leaves that are essential for wrapping zongzi, the traditional glutinous rice dumpling enjoyed at this time of year.
Yashipu has earned the nickname "Zongzi Leaf Village" thanks to its extensive cultivation of approximately 45 hectares of zongzi leaves grown under the shade of mature rubber trees. This unique method not only makes full use of available land resources but also protects the delicate leaves from direct sunlight, ensuring they grow supple and fragrant. Each year, the village delivers an impressive harvest of around six million leaves to markets across China.
The rise of zongzi leaf farming has transformed the local economy. A decade ago, most residents relied on traditional crops with limited profits. Today, the zongzi leaf industry has multiplied villagers’ annual incomes by six times, offering a reliable path out of poverty. During the Dragon Boat Festival season, demand surges, often exceeding supply due to the desirable qualities of Yashipu’s leaves—their flexibility, rich aroma, and generous size make them favorites among zongzi makers nationwide.
Many villagers have diversified their agricultural activities as a result. Some households have established processing workshops to sort, clean, and package the leaves for shipment, creating additional job opportunities. Local leaders say the success of zongzi leaf cultivation is inspiring neighboring communities to follow Yashipu’s lead, fostering a spirit of entrepreneurship and regional collaboration.
Looking forward, villagers are optimistic. They plan to further expand their plantations and improve cultivation techniques to meet growing demand, especially as zongzi continues to gain popularity both domestically and abroad. The humble zongzi leaf—once a simple wrapper for a festive treat—has become a symbol of hope and a foundation for prosperity in Yashipu Village.
